Neuhoff

In 2016, Smith Gee Studio led a community charrette and master planning process to bring new life and opportunity to this one-of-a-kind historic slaughterhouse along the Cumberland River. Through the strategic preservation of existing buildings, a mix of uses, addition of new development, and a network of streetscapes and open spaces, the resulting built environment provides for a truly unique experience. In 2018, Atlanta-based New City Properties partnered with S9 Architecture, HKS, and Smith Gee Studio to update the master plan and secure zoning entitlements for a mixed-use destination for living, working, and relaxing.

After working together to refine the overall vision, SGS took over as architects for the adaptive reuse of the historic “Curve Building”, the Boiler Building, and the Engine Room, now Monday Night Brewing. After carefully assessing the existing structures, much of the original buildings were retained. Selective demolition and restrained modern interventions reveal a contrast of old and new, patina and polish. Where fire and water-damaged structures were removed, a new lobby core forms a building within a building and a modern backdrop that reflects the historic remains. The rejuvenated neighborhood icon introduces a rich mix of retail, food & beverage, creative office spaces, and a dramatic river terrace of architectural relics that frames views and offers public access to the river.
