Spread Market & Larder

Spread Market + Larder, tucked inside a lovingly restored 1920s home, brings fresh bread, handmade sandwiches, curated wines, and thoughtfully sourced pantry and household goods to Nashville’s Germantown neighborhood. Smith Gee Studio led the restoration and designed a seamless addition, preserving the charm of one of the city’s most historic districts.

Located in the Germantown Historic Preservation Overlay District, the project came with a tangle of design restrictions. The husband-and-wife owners explored several business models before landing on one that balanced practicality with preservation. Integrating modern essentials—like vent hoods, walk-in coolers, ADA access, and mechanical parking—required creative solutions that respected the home’s historic status, all while navigating patio use, liquor licensing, and exterior design constraints. The result is a neighborhood staple that blends old character with new purpose.
