PROJECT INFORMATION
Located in the heart of one of Nashville’s historically African American neighborhoods, the design of the new North Nashville Transit Center has taken its cues from the community to reflect the history, culture, and vibe of North Nashville. Utilizing an on-line survey, in-person community engagement, and social media live broadcasts, the team gathered neighborhood feedback months before any drawing began. Through this process, celebrating the “Voices of North Nashville” became a prominent design concept and focus.
The project will be named after the late Ernest “Rip” Patton, Jr., a civil rights activist and veteran of the Freedom Riders. On site features will include digital screens with interactive and educational storytelling elements about the Civil Rights movement and the many Freedom Riders from North Nashville, curated public art by North Nashville artists, and a plaza space with an integrated stage for neighborhood events.
SGS is working in collaboration with Wendel (Design Architect/Transit Consultant) on the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2024.
