Senior Architectural Designer

The Senior Designer I at Smith Gee Studio is a skilled design professional—preferably on the path to licensure—who supports project execution across multiple phases. This individual is responsible for translating design direction into technical documentation, coordinating effectively with internal and external team members, and providing guidance to junior staff. Senior Designer I professionals bring a balance of creative problem-solving, technical competency, and collaboration to every assignment, and are expected to contribute to both the success of the design process and the culture of the firm.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Documentation

  • Execute design intent through drawings, 3D models, and specifications that meet SGS standards.
  • Engage in concept development, design exploration, and document production.
  • Apply redlines and design feedback efficiently with an emphasis on reducing repeated errors.

Project Coordination

  • Collaborate with team members, consultants, vendors, and stakeholders to ensure alignment across disciplines.
  • Support the Construction Administration process, including accurate and timely RFI and submittal tracking and distribution.
  • Contribute to project organization by updating task status in work plans and supporting internal coordination.

Technical Mentorship

  • Assist junior team members with detailing, modeling, and documentation standards.
  • Reinforce quality control processes and promote technical growth through peer learning and example-setting.
  • Promote knowledge-sharing and help elevate the team’s performance.

Professional Standards

  • Maintain high standards for timesheet accuracy and responsiveness.
  • Comply fully with internal documentation and task reporting expectations.
  • Contribute ideas during design feedback loops and internal team critiques.

Qualifications

  • Education: Professional degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or a related field from an accredited program (NAAB, CIDA, or equivalent).
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience producing design and technical documentation across varied project types.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, and other design tools (SketchUp, AutoCAD, Rhino, Enscape, Lumion).
    • Familiarity with building systems, codes, and documentation protocols.
    • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Attributes: Reliable, team-oriented, technically curious, and committed to design quality.
  • Travel: Minimal (<10%), based on project needs.
